Configuring Windows 2000 Dial-Up Networking

  • Click "Start."
  • Click "Settings."
  • Click "Network & Dial-Up ..."

  • Click "Make New Connection."
  • Click "Next" to begin the process.
  • Choose to "Dial-up to the Internet."
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Choose "I want to set up my Internet connection manually . . . "
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Select "I connect through a phone line and a modem."
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Leave the area code blank. Put in the phone number for the computer you are dialing.
  • For 10-digit dialing, put the area code in the phone number box (not the area code box).

Hint: Add 3 or 4 commas on the end for a more stable connection. Also If you are at work or in a hotel then you may need to dial 9 to get an outside line. In that case, place a 9,, in front of the phone number. Be sure to put one or two commas after the 9 so that the phone line will transfer before the modem starts dialing.You may also put a comma at the front of the number to force the modem to wait for a dialtone.

 

  • Remove the checkmark in the "Use area code and Dialing Properties" checkbox.
  • Click the "Advanced" button.

 

  • Choose "PPP" connection.
  • Choose "Disable LCP Extensions."
  • Choose "None" for the logon procedure.
  • Click the "Addresses" tab.
  • Under IP address choose "Inernet service provider automatically provides one."
  • Under DNS server address choose "My ISP automatically provides a DNS address."
  • Click the "OK" button.
  • Type In your "User name" and "Password."
  • Click the "Next" button.

Remember that user names and passwords are case sensitive.

  • Type in the name of your ISP.
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Choose "Yes."
  • Clickthe "Next" button.
  • Select "Create a new Internet mail account."
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Enter the name you want displayed in the "Display name" box.
  • Click the "Next" button.

Hint: The display name is the name that people see when they receive an e-mail from you. It does not have to match your e-mail identity.

  • Enter your E-mail address.
  • Click the "Next" button.

  • Your mail server address will be mail.ispname.com (or .net) depending upon your ISP.(For example, if you were elf@northpole.com then your mail server would be mail.northpole.com for both the incoming and outgoing mail server.)
  • Click Next

  • Your "User Name" would be the part of your email addres that comes before the '@' (for example if your email address was elf@northpole.com your logon name would be elf.)
  • Click "Next"

 

If you have a free phone line attached to the computer then put a checkmark in the box to connect to the internet after you click the finish button.

  • Click the "Finish" button.
